The Cat Came Back Song

One of my favorite folk songs I’ve sang at many parties is The Cat Came Back

But the cat came back the very next day. Yes, the cat came back. They thought he was gone. But the cat came back. He just wouldn’t stay away. – refrain from “The Cat Came Back” by Harry S. Miler

About 15 years ago my husband and I participated in a play group.  It was comprised mostly of fellow Toastmasters who shared a passion for plays. We would obtain the script to plays and each take a role and sit around and read our parts for an act or two, take a break, and then watch a film of the play being performed.  It was great fun.

Within that group was a man (Robert [Bob] Levy) who played the guitar and sang folk songs. My ABSOLUTE favorite folk song, and one he played at my 50th Birthday party, was called “The Cat Came Back.” I loved it not only for the title and lyrics, but because It was EASY to join in with the rest to sing the refrain. Often times we’d take turns offering our own demise for the cat that always came back.

According to Wikipedia, the Cat Came back: “is a comic song written by Harry S. Miller] in 1893. “The Cat Came Back” has since entered the folk tradition and been recorded under variations of the title—”But the Cat Came Back”, “And the Cat Came Back”, etc. It is also a popular children’s song.”

Here is the tune:

If I ever learn to play the guitar, or return to the piano, I’m getting the sheet music and playing this delightful cat song!
